ICT and Design Teacher
As an ICT and Design Teacher, you play a key role in supporting the digital, creative, technical, and problem-solving development of learners from Prep to Grade 8.
Role Description
As an ICT and Design Teacher, you play a key role in supporting the digital, creative, technical, and problem-solving development of learners from Prep to Grade 8. Through engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences, you help learners develop programming, robotics, digital literacy, digital citizenship, design thinking, practical making, and digital fabrication skills. By creating a safe, innovative, and hands-on learning environment, you encourage every learner to think critically, solve problems, design and create meaningful solutions, use technology responsibly, and develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to thrive in an increasingly technological world.
Responsibilities
The following is a breakdown of the responsibilities of the ICT and Design teacher:
- Planning and delivering engaging and effective ICT and Design lessons that align with the school curriculum, learning objectives, and expected learning outcomes.
- Teaching age-appropriate programming, computational thinking, robotics, digital literacy, digital citizenship, online safety, design processes, woodworking, crafts, 3D modeling, 3D printing, and other relevant practical and digital fabrication skills.
- Assessing, evaluating, and monitoring learner progress through observation, practical demonstrations, project work, portfolios, and feedback to support learners in achieving their ICT and Design learning goals, specifically targeting the IPC and IMYC learning goals, as well as any Cambridge requirements, where applicable.
- Differentiating instruction and providing appropriate support, accommodations, and challenges to meet the diverse abilities, prior experiences, and learning needs of all learners.
- Establishing and maintaining a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment that promotes creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, experimentation, independence, and learner wellbeing.
- Managing classroom routines, digital devices, tools, materials, equipment, and learner behavior in a consistent and fair manner to maximize productive learning time.
- Teaching learners to use technology responsibly, ethically, and safely, including appropriate online behavior, digital footprints, privacy, cybersecurity, copyright, intellectual property, and the critical evaluation of online information and AI-generated content.
- Guiding learners through the design process, including identifying problems, conducting research, generating ideas, planning, prototyping, creating, testing, evaluating, and refining digital and physical products.
- Teaching learners to apply programming, robotics, engineering, and computational thinking skills to solve problems, develop solutions, and create functional digital and physical projects.
- Teaching appropriate practical skills in woodworking, crafts, model-making, material selection, construction, finishing techniques, computer-aided design (CAD), 3D modeling, 3D printing, and other relevant design technologies.
- Ensuring the safe and responsible use of computers, software, online platforms, hand tools, power tools, machinery, 3D printers, and other classroom and workshop equipment, including appropriate supervision and protective equipment.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date assessment records, learner progress reports, project documentation, and other required educational records in a timely manner.
- Managing the safe use, maintenance, organization, and storage of digital devices, software, tools, machinery, materials, and other resources, and reporting technical issues, equipment faults, and safety concerns promptly.
- Coordinating the facilities, equipment, materials, software, consumables, and logistical requirements necessary for ICT and Design lessons, projects, and other school activities to ensure they are prepared, safe, and ready for use.
- Encouraging learners to develop creativity, resilience, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, attention to detail, perseverance, and a willingness to learn from mistakes through experimentation and iterative improvement.
- Promoting responsible digital citizenship and helping learners understand the social, ethical, environmental, and practical implications of technology and design in everyday life.
- Communicating effectively with parents and guardians regarding learner progress, achievements, areas for improvement, and any relevant concerns during parent-teacher conferences and other appropriate communications.
- Collaborating with classroom teachers, specialist teachers, and support staff to support learner development and establish meaningful connections between ICT, Design, and other curricular areas.
- Developing and facilitating curriculum connected, project-based learning opportunities that use programming, robotics, design thinking, digital fabrication, and practical making to real-world challenges and applications.
- Supporting the integration of appropriate digital technologies and design practices into teaching and learning across the school, where applicable and agreed with school leadership.
- Participating in parent-teacher conferences, school events, exhibitions, project showcases, extracurricular activities, and other initiatives that support learner development and the wider school community.
- Participating in professional development opportunities to remain current with best practices in ICT education, programming, robotics, digital citizenship, emerging technologies, design education, workshop practices, and educational technology.
- Maintaining clean, organized, and safe teaching spaces, including classrooms, makerspace, equipment storage areas, and other assigned facilities.
- Being punctual and reliable in attendance and adhering to the school's attendance policy.
- Maintaining effective communication with classroom teachers, specialist teachers, administration, and support staff to ensure consistent learner support, appropriate resource management, and effective curricular planning.
- Promoting the school's values, mission, and expectations through daily interactions with learners, families, colleagues, and the wider school community.
